Good to hear it's been of use Ferris.

@Johannes: Sorry, no project for now, but I'll see if I can crank something out. Not working on Oracle at the moment, so it might take some time.

Thanks for this series, Anders. We've recently been doing some tuning of the SQL setup here (I was actually John the new guy, haha), and your posts have been very inspiring and informative.

Yup, I sort of forgot those steps. :) Neither Ant or SQLPlus needs installation (found a version of SQLPlus that didn't) from an admin, so you can just unpack them and run. So putting all this in a jar and unpacking on run could be a feasible way to do it. For dev environments (where the example is from) I'm not sure it's the way to go, but for deploying into the different environments it would be really good.

I've been playing around in my head with creating a Java project that handles download and unpacking of the released project, and this could also handle ant/sqlplus installation.

I like this approach. Do you have an example project available to share with your loyal readers?

The only "buts" I've experienced with the approach have been the requirements for installing and configuring SQL plus (or whatever) and Ant.

I'm wondering if it is (technically!) possible to improve it. At least for test and production installations. Do you think it is possible, through Maven magic, to have an stand alone executable Jar file so you could say: "java -jar application-schema.jar install 4.11 -dba-user sys -dba-password mgr", for example?
