Oracle SQL Developer

Published by at 20:52 under Java

Oracle has released version 1.2 of SQL Developer. When working with Oracle it’s a really good (and free) alternative to TOAD, especially for someone that’s mainly a Java guy like me. I know my way around relational databases, but when it comes to hardcore stuff I leave it to someone else. :) It does have integrated debugging and plan analysis though, so it should suffice for someone doing a bit of stuff in Oracle.

If you are doing Java development then you might also want to look at JDeveloper.
In 10.1.3 you get a lot of this pl/sql debugging and database integration built into JDeveloper.
Release 11 technology preview basically integrated the full SQL Developer into JDeveloper.

Shameless plug that one. I tried JDeveloper a while back and absolutely hated it. Since it’s a couple of years since then I’ll might give it a short spin.
